• Female Leads in Science Fiction Novels

In a discussion with book reviewer Shaun Duke on Twitter, he made an interesting comment. He said that he couldn’t think of any lead female characters in Science Fiction books. When I tried to respond right away I realized all the books that were coming to my mind were more Fantasy or Speculative than true [...]

  • World Building with a Magic 8 Ball

So perhaps I wasn’t as ready to start a new novel as I thought, but I needed to do something while I wait to see what happens to my novel “Ice Debt” (see this post – update 7). But I was stuck. I love building worlds but it wasn’t coming to me this time. I [...]

  • Chinese Whisperings Promo

Just wanted to give you all a quick update on the the anthology that holds my 5th published short story. It was going to be released on December 1 2009, but due to unforeseen events and deadlines the release date has been pushed back to January 1 2009. I’d rather the editors and owners do [...]

  • The 4 Year Plan

4 years ago, on August 23 2006, I started blogging. It was a way of telling the universe that I was committed to writing – for real this time. I started on blogger, and you can read from the beginning up until August 2008 (when I moved to WordPress) @ http://dustandstrangerthings.blogspot.com/ – but only until [...]

  • 10 Research Resources for Fiction Writers

Research for fiction writers seems to be coming up a lot lately. Whether you look at Write Anything’s recent guest post by Justyn Rowe, or Krista D. Ball’s series called ‘A Nibble of History’ people are talking about it… and the general feeling I’m getting is that a lot writers aren’t doing it properly. I [...]

Rabit Hole Day

Tuesday, January 27, 2009    View Comments

The sky turned purple this morning. No really. It was the Aliens. You see the Aliens (the Oxnats if I’m going to be formal, though I still prefer “Ox”) have been trying for months to make the space stations orbiting Earth livable. They’ve been living in those spaceships hoping to move into a more permanent residence. The Chief [...]

Broadcasting Live Excerpt

Friday, January 23, 2009    View Comments

So Cosmic left a comment the other day saying that I should just post the story that was recently rejected on my Blog. Much as that would be cool, I wouldn’t be able to get it published anywhere else if I did that. Technically, people from the industry see content posted on blogs as being [...]

January 15 was the deadline for the Sinful Flash Fiction Challenge. 7 flash fiction (or short story) pieces for each of the deadly sins. I didn’t do it gracefully, but I finished within the deadline (Just!). I wrote two stories a day for the last two days. I’m not sure if this does or doesn’t [...]

Including punctuation and spaces between words. [...]

Rejected by Tesseracts 13

Tuesday, January 13, 2009    View Comments

What a crappy way to end the day. I just received an email letting me know that “Broadcasting Live” has been rejected from inclusion in the Tesseracts 13 anthology. This short story has now been rejected 3 times (although the first two times it was under a different title). It was a nice rejection though. [...]

The following blog post summerizes this contest a lot better than I can. http://www.dailywritingtips.com/is-your-novel-ready-to-go/ The contest is essentailly for anyone who has completed a novel already and is willing to let the public users of Amazon vote to get your book published by Penguin. The deadline is February 2. Here is the official site for [...]

    Reviews and General Love!

      November 24, 2009
      A Great Collection of Horror,
This is a mixed collection of well written horror stories, some with hints of gore, some a smattering of science fiction, and still others contain bits of humor. What's truly fun about this collection is that not all of the authors have been published before, so it's giving new writers a chance showcase their works in an otherwise "hard to break in", horror market. Who knows, the next Stephen King may be lurking amongst these creepy pages.
