• Female Leads in Science Fiction Novels

In a discussion with book reviewer Shaun Duke on Twitter, he made an interesting comment. He said that he couldn’t think of any lead female characters in Science Fiction books. When I tried to respond right away I realized all the books that were coming to my mind were more Fantasy or Speculative than true [...]

  • World Building with a Magic 8 Ball

So perhaps I wasn’t as ready to start a new novel as I thought, but I needed to do something while I wait to see what happens to my novel “Ice Debt” (see this post – update 7). But I was stuck. I love building worlds but it wasn’t coming to me this time. I [...]

  • Chinese Whisperings Promo

Just wanted to give you all a quick update on the the anthology that holds my 5th published short story. It was going to be released on December 1 2009, but due to unforeseen events and deadlines the release date has been pushed back to January 1 2009. I’d rather the editors and owners do [...]

  • The 4 Year Plan

4 years ago, on August 23 2006, I started blogging. It was a way of telling the universe that I was committed to writing – for real this time. I started on blogger, and you can read from the beginning up until August 2008 (when I moved to WordPress) @ http://dustandstrangerthings.blogspot.com/ – but only until [...]

  • 10 Research Resources for Fiction Writers

Research for fiction writers seems to be coming up a lot lately. Whether you look at Write Anything’s recent guest post by Justyn Rowe, or Krista D. Ball’s series called ‘A Nibble of History’ people are talking about it… and the general feeling I’m getting is that a lot writers aren’t doing it properly. I [...]

Word Count (Nov 20)

Thursday, November 20, 2008    View Comments

Today I can honestly tell you that life is good. I’m not stressed out at work, I’m able to write over my lunch hours, my dogs have been behaving (mostly) and my writing is doing great. Here’s what I mean: Tuesday: 696 words on that unnamed short story. Wednesday: 669 words on the same story [...]

Wednesday Meetings

Wednesday, November 12, 2008    View Comments

Wednesdays! Wednesdays are great days. It’s the day of the week that I get to meet up with Rox and write. It’s like making a doctors appointment or scheduling an important meeting in that it’s something you have to keep. But it’s enjoyable because I want to do anyway. I don’t have much in the [...]

World Fantasy Con – Part 2

Sunday, November 9, 2008    View Comments

So while I was at the World Fantasy Conference (WFC) I submitted a short story called Broadcasting Live to Tesseracts 13. It’s a science fiction story with a touch of horror. I won’t find out until the new year if I’ll make it into the short story anthology but I have a good feeling about [...]

Character Name Obsessions

Wednesday, November 5, 2008    View Comments

So it seems I’m obsessed with names that start (or sound like) “K”. My main character in “Ice Debt” is Kylee. My first novel’s main character was Mikayla. The hero in the short story I recently submitted to Tesseracts 13 was Kate. The main character’s mother in my short story “Freedom Fire” was Kalin. In [...]

World Fantasy Con

Monday, November 3, 2008    View Comments

The World Fantasy Conference took place this weekend in Calgary, Alberta. It was an amazing experience. Unlike smaller conferences that are more for the fans (and has the reputation for lots of people dressed up as their favourite characters) this was the industry conference. There were tons of well known writers there. Just to name [...]

New Blog

Tuesday, October 14, 2008    View Comments

Here we go… A brand new blog to write down my thoughts on. I’m not sure I want to import my old blog posts yet (there is just so many posts there) so here is a link to my old blog. I’ll be keeping it open as an archive for a while yet. http://dustandstrangerthings.blogspot.com/ I [...]

    Reviews and General Love!

      November 24, 2009
      A Great Collection of Horror,
This is a mixed collection of well written horror stories, some with hints of gore, some a smattering of science fiction, and still others contain bits of humor. What's truly fun about this collection is that not all of the authors have been published before, so it's giving new writers a chance showcase their works in an otherwise "hard to break in", horror market. Who knows, the next Stephen King may be lurking amongst these creepy pages.
